Extra info
Jazz piano prodigy on the verge of his international breakthrough.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Joey Alexander has just turned eighteen, but he’s already being recognized as a genius. The Bali-born pianist was only eight when he earned the trust of Herbie Hancock. At ten, he was brought to America by Wynton Marsalis, who was blown away by the young pianist’s YouTube clips. Coltrane, Monk, Chick Corea: he had already mastered their tunes. Meanwhile he’s also making an impact with his own music.
Joey Alexander’s most recent album is Warna, which means ‘color’ in his native language. It contains spectacular uptempo songs as well as reflective, moving original compositions, alongside tunes by Joe Henderson and Sting. Joey Alexander is a three-time Grammy nominee and has reached top positions in the annual polls of Downbeat and JazzTimes. At the BIMHUIS he will perform with his acoustic trio.
