Guitarist Jeff Parker assumes the role of ‘mad beats professor’ (The Observer) in The New Breed, with which he has released two albums marrying improvised music with a hip-hop-like production style.
Jeff Parker is best known as a jazz guitarist, ‘a master of soulful phrasing, fluent but never flashy (JazzTimes). His openness to various styles of music became apparent in the mid-1990s when he became a member of Tortoise, the influential post-rock band from Chicago. He also stayed connected to progressive improv-collectives such as Isotope 217 and The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). He currently lives in Los Angeles.
‘By turns atmospheric and funky, the music mixes improvisation and composed material across frameworks of beats and samples, the sounds swirling together like echoes of different parties in an apartment building hallway’ (Downbeat over het album The New Breed).
