Canadian tenor and composer Jeremy Dutcher seemed destined to become an opera singer, until he heard old field recordings of the Wolastoq, his ancestral community. He composed astounding music based on the old Wolastoq songs, accompanying himself on piano.

With his impressive voice and his emotional performance he’s able to reach a large audience, even though he sings in a language that only has a few hundred native speakers. His debut album Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa remains gripping throughout, thanks to the fascinating string and horn arrangements that shape-shift between classical, traditional and pop. Last year the album won a Polaris Music Prize, the Canadian Grammy.
