Interview with Paco Osuna & Alex Under by Club Poema, Utrecht
During the 2nd anniversary of Club Poema, you guys played together for the first time, which was something that wasn’t planned before. How did you experienced this and was this the beginning of a new exclusive project?
Paco: Actually, no. We had a few shows together in the past, but after Poema we decided to continue doing this, because of the amazing energy and complicity of both.
Alex: Yes yes, it was amazing. We felt so comfortable playing together and of course that gig made us thinking about doing it as a regular thing. And so we did.
In what ways does the Dutch Techno scene resembles the Spanish Techno scene and do you experience many differences?
Paco: Holland was always a big influence and a reference, since I discovered Steve Rachmad, Shinedoe, Speedy J. Nowadays Kabale und Liebe, Daniel Sanchez, Olene Kadar, etc. The Dutch sound has his own personality, it doesn’t matter when, they always have amazing producers from who I got my inspiration. Love DUTCH!!!
Alex: Oh, we Spanish don’t have our own Techno, we are kings without a country. Paco and myself, we are thinking on asking for the Dutch nationality, only issue is the football team..
Are there any Dutch producers you would like to work with?
Paco: Of course with many of them, starting from Speedy J and Steve Rachmad, or more recently Kabale und Liebe, Daniel Sanchez, Olene Kadar, etc… love his sounds.
Alex: I admire a few, Anton Pieëte first on the list. I first met him in Poema. And I fell in love. It’s that crazy hair what makes me crazy, and the music wasn’t so bad. Also Steve Rachmad and a couple of young guns called Loops.
How have you experienced playing in Club Poema last couple of years?
Paco: AMAZING!!!! Poema for me is my house. I feel so good and comfortable each time I´m there. I can´t imagine a future without Poema or a Queensday without Poema. I’ve been playing since many years and each time I enjoy it as the first day. Also because my best experience has a DJ happened there. So for me it´s super special.
Alex: I always loved the times there. I must say that the Netherlands is my favourite country to play in Europe, because everything is so professional and the crowd is devoted to music. Dutch know how to make parties and how to enjoy them properly. Poema is the max expression of it.
The Techno scene has been in a grow spurt the last few years, the digital movement has developed new ways to perform through products as Traktor, Ableton, Serato etc. What do you think about this development? How do you manage to ‘stand out from the crowd’?
Paco: Well, I think the technology is in our hands for use. But sometimes, in the case of the vinyls, I miss going to the shops each week a lot to find new records. At the same time I love to play a track right after it’s finished, so I totally recommend and support the new technologies.
Alex: I don’t feel the need of standing out of the crowd. Of course nowadays everything is easier in terms of production and performing, and that has a bright and a dark side, and is for each one to value. I’m just a musician and in this business I don’t give much about anything apart from music itself.
Where or from whom do you get your musical inspiration from nowadays?
Paco: Hmm… It depends. But most of the time it’s about how I feel. If I’m happy I feel creative and fast working. When I’m stressed for some reason when I go to the studio, I feel boring and slow and I like nothing that I do... playing in the weekends gives me a lot of ideas.
Alex: With my last album, which I just finished, I got the inspiration from an almost deadly lung illness I suffered the past spring. It’s not that you can’t see the death with the scythe. It didn’t represent pain. But those moments apart , are giving me the creeps, also worked on me as a catharsis, so it brought me the inspiration that I was missing for some time then.
What are your future plans aside from playing at many gigs and producing new tunes?
Paco: Yes, I have a crazy schedule this year. Unfortunately I can’t spend all time that I wish to be in the studio, but right now I’m producing my new EP for Plus8 and also working on a few more projects (including producing together with Alex). I hope all will be released before end of the year.
Alex: I own a couple of restaurants in Tokyo and Osaka, and will retire there to work the kitchen soon.
If you could recommend one artist from Spain for the Dutch promoters, who would it be? Why him/her?
Paco: Alex Under, is a guarantee for a party.
Alex: I would recommend Paco Osuna no doubts; he is just the best worldwide DJ. But nothing that Dutch promoters don’t know already.
Is there a chance we see a new release coming up soon produced by the both of you?
Paco: As I said before, yes, we have few plans for the future, I like Alex a lot as a person, so that makes it easy to work with him. I’m sure that in the future many collaborations between both of us will appear.
Alex: Sure, its not easy for us to have some time together to work on it, and it’s taking more time than we would want, but personally, its the project that motivates me the most right now.
Thank you for your time to answer these questions and we’ll see you on the 25th of September for a hot and steamy session!
We are looking forward to it!
