Biography Victor Coral
‘Dance first. Think later. It's the natural order.’ - Samuel Beckett
Victor Coral’s entire life is music: he’s a DJ, producer, promoter, writer and dedicated party animal. Though he first played with decks at the age of 2 whilst his parents were sleeping, Victor’s professional dues came on the Stratumseind, the notorious nightlife strip in his former hometown of Eindhoven. Fully infected by the electronic big, he then moved to Amsterdam and was installed as a junior resident of the Chemistry Collective where he played the infamous RUSH Nights. It was an award winning party that saw Victor embrace his love of house, techno, electronica, synth pop, Italo, new wave and of course disco. “I’ve never considered myself a purist,” he says. “But I have to say that the love for a filthy four-to-tha-floor groove with some dark edges might be considered a consistency in my style.”
Not long after the end of that residency, Victor hooked up with fellow Dutch star ONNO to produce some killer tech house grooves as PresetOne and promote a bimonthly club night at Amsterdam’s notorious Studio 80, namely Babylon. A famed party in Dutch circles, it was quickly followed by Victor appearing regularly both as a back stage hand and front of stage performer with the Backstage crew at Chicago Social Club.
As well as also being the proud winner of three Gouden Kabouter Awards (Golden Goblins), playing every major Dutch festival from Mysterland to Dance Valley, being an Ibiza resident and playing at the Guggenheim Museum, New York, Victor has more up his sleeve… In his latest project he has turned his active role into a more observant participation as academic chronicler of the scene. Over the last three years he has published several scholarly essays on pop culture, subcultures and house music. In fall 2012, his master thesis on Cultural Studies on the Amsterdam house scene will be complete, whilst his job as an assistant teacher at the University of Amsterdam, and lectures on the music scene, will continue to excite students everywhere, as will his inimitable DJ sets.
