Biography Boys Noize

b. Alexander Ridha, 1983, Hamburg, Germany.

The plural in the artist title may be a little misleading, as the moniker is actually a solo project from producer Alexander Ridha. The "noize" descriptor in the name is, however, an accurate tag. Feted by artists such as Tiga, Erol Alkan and Soulwax, the youthful Berlin-based producer creates a maximalist music that is noisy and brash, sometimes recalling Daft Punk at their most boisterous. As if to emphasise his lack of subtlety, Ridha has declared "fuck off new rave and bring back the party techno" on his MySpace page. Such a declaration could easily be taken as a succinct and to-the-point manifesto for the producer. His EPs for the International DeeJay Gigolo, Turbo and Kitsuné imprints and his subsequent 2007 self-released Oi Oi Oi seemed tailor-made for pummelling dancefloors, decimating speakers and laying waste to party venues rather than more sedentary pursuits (thus, not unreasonably, Oi Oi Oi was not hugely effective as a home-listening set). Tellingly, the album was packaged in an image of a (Christoph Steinmeyer-designed) skull re-imagined as a disco mirror ball. That Ridha named tracks "Wu Tang" and "Don't Believe The Hype" seemed to suggest a kinship and/or love for hip-hop. Ridha has remixed tracks as diverse as Feist's "My Moon My Man", Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus", Bloc Party's "Banquet", Marilyn Manson's "Putting Holes in Happiness", and Kaiser Chiefs' "Everyday I Love You Less And Less". Ridha has also created music under the names Morgentau, Eastwest and Puzique and runs his own Boys Noize label.
